The excavations conducted at the village site of La Consentida, in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, provide mortuary and bioarchaeological evidence for the origins of formal cemeteries and changes in skeletal health during the Early Formative Period (2000-1000BC). These excavations, conducted in 2009 and 2012 by Dr. Guy Hepp et al, recovered 14, or possibly 15, individuals in 12 discreet burials. Stable isotope results and bioarchaeological data suggest significant maize consumption, along with wild resources, resulting in increased dental attrition and pathologies.
