The skeleton is a dynamic tissue that communicates a wealth of information about past populations. Thanks to the study of bone functional adaptation, it can also allow us a glimpse beyond basic biology into everyday activity and lifestyle. We’ll explore the variety of ways bone functional adaptation has helped put the person back into the bones and broadened our understanding of archaeological transitions.
Rob’yn Johnston is a PhD candidate in biological anthropology at the University of Missouri who has been captivated by skeletons since she was a teenager. Since then, she has been fortunate enough to work everywhere from anatomy labs to Central Asia, and currently works as a CRM archaeologist and Palomar College adjunct professor.
